Oil and Gas Boom in Southeastern New Mexico Leading to Injuries

Kevin Holmes Aug. 16, 2019

Southeastern New Mexico is home to the Permian Basin, one of the largest oil fields in the United States. The field is an important source of oil, natural gas, and potash.

Increases in technology and efficiency, combined with increasing demand for oil and natural gas, have led to a huge influx of oilfield companies, oilfield workers, and oilfield equipment. While this boom is good for New Mexico in some ways, it is bad in others.

With an increase in oilfield work comes an increase in oilfield workplace accidents.

The oil boom means oilfield workers will likely suffer more compensable workplace accidents, throwing them into a Workers' Compensation system that can be confusing and frustrating at a time when the last thing they need is to be frustrated by insurance company bureaucracy and the sometimes unfair claim denials that come with it.

All that oil has to go somewhere, of course. And all that oilfield work needs supplies and people to run. So with the oilfield boom comes an explosion in the number of medium and heavy trucks and semi-trucks on the road in Southeastern New Mexico.

The roads in towns like Carlsbad, Clovis, Artesia, Roswell, and Hobbs are not made to accomodate all those extra trucks. Just like those towns themselves are not made to handle the hundreds of thousands of extra oilfield workers who have poured into them as a result of the oil boom (leading to extremely expensive housing). Because the roads are not designed or equipped to handle the extra traffic, they can be dangerous. And with more trucks comes an increased likelihood of trucking crashes.

As a result, we expect to see a huge increase in oilfield truck accidents, including fatal crashes and other kinds of wrongful death or serious injuries.

That means Southeast New Mexico oilfield workers, their families, and the people who live in and around the oil patch will need even more help from experienced, aggressive injury attorneys.
